I do not want windows update service to run on machines in my domain so patches aren't automatically downloaded and/or installed. but it looks like now shavlik is using the windows update service to install patches on windows 7, i can see the event log messages that patches fail to install because windows update service is not running or disabled(which it is by group policy). Is there a work around for this issue, or do i now need to make sure windows update is running? I have used shavlik for 7 years and have always had windows udpate service disabled by group policy. Is there a way around using windows update service or is this a microsoft requirement now?
The Windows Update service is a requirement for Microsoft patches to run on Windows 7 and Server 2008. You could try setting it to manual, rather than automatic startup. This will allow the service to be started when needed, but it won't automatically start up with the system.
