The only trouble is if the agents are unable to check in with the console they will not see updates/changes to your agent policy including any updates to patch and service pack groups that are used. Other than that the only other problem you might hit is if the agent doesn't check in with the Protect console for over 45 days, it will automatically lose it's license seat.
The agent can check in if you have the user connect via VPN while they are traveling so this could be a possible workaround, but it would require that you make the user aware that they may need to do this every so often.
We use agents with everything, even desktops, so we can have varying policy settings. Also because not all of our machines are always on, and wake on lan is flaky.
Something to note. Some of our laptops do not see internet or network for more than 90 days. The VMware protect client will expire if it has not communicated to the server.
