To clarify, we do not currently have a way of identifying that the installs are ESR versions, due to the way in which the vendor installs the product. We will detect these as standard versions. Any updates deployed to machines with ESR versions will be standard, and thus cause the installed version to become standard.
We are currently exploring possible solutions or workarounds, but as of yet have not discovered a method of handling ESR versions. We are hoping the vendor will change the installation method such that we are able to detect that the product is at an ESR version.
As far as I am concerned, it doesn't need to detect whether it's ESR or not. I would rather like to choose to only use ESR throughout all of my computers, and would like the ESR brance to install over any general release version. I would assume that most enterprises would rather use ESR, but it would be nice if there were a mechanism to make that choice.
Nonetheless, I do understand that a mechanism for identifying installed ESR versions on computers that would work with vCenter Protec doesn't exist. The only places I found this info is as text in application.ini, platform.ini, or channel-prefs.js. vCenter Protect merely looks in registry keys or file metadata. Mozilla needs the ESR package to install a single extra file that the general release doesn't install, and it would be as simple as pie.
Today I noticed that Firefox 10 ESR is updating with the ESR patches, but Thunderbird 10 ESR is still updating to 11.
Again, if we are unable to detect that a product is an ESR version, then we are unable to differentiate which update to apply (i.e. ESR or Standard).
