    Agents on desktop units?

Any advantage in deploying agents on desktop units?  I've always put them on my laptops, but never on my desktops and servers.

If you are utilizing the anti-malware component, it would make sense to have the agents on all of the machines which you are managing within your environment. Else, agentless scanning and deployment provides the most direct control of the patch management process. The agent is most particularly useful for managing machines which are not regularly accessible from the console (e.g. laptops which are frequently outside of your network environment).
