What are the best practices for putting the Shavlik database on it's own dedicated SQL Server 2008R2 server?

We have multiple consoles, each of which currently use their own local Express database. We'd like to centralize to one SQL server, and preferably one Shavlik database instance if feasible. Also, please detail performance considerations - when does it make sense to have the SQL server at the local site vs a remote site (which could possibly have a slower network bandwidth).
