running into roughly 120 machines in our environment running mix of Windows8.1 and Windows 7 that are failing to install security patches. I currently have a case open with Microsoft since November 2017 and they are unable to provide a solution. The machines in question all fail to install security patches with error 0x80073701. CBS logs usually indicate an issue with a previous rollup stating "Failed to pin deployment" If we roll the patch back in question, new patches will install but then are rolled off during the reboot due to "Driver Store. Error = 0x00000490" in setupapi.dev.log. The issue here is that the drivers referenced can be different for each case. Microsoft has advised changing some registry flags in the components hive of registry so that the Driver store error is bypassed. This works but is painful to determine what drivers are issues and what values need changing, as it can be different on the various systems. Has anyone else experienced this? I have tried all the basic solutions (SoftwareDistribution reset, SFC, DISM etc. etc) but there seems to be no utility to correct this. Microsoft advised there is no tool to correct the "Drive store Error" like they have for other components (like DISM) and it will be a manual process. Has anyone else experienced this type of failure? If so, any recommended solutions to resolve (outside of re-imaging)? Any insight would be helpful. Thanks.
