Shavlik Protect - Deployment stuck at Scheduled

    ConorMcCracken Rookie

      Hi

      Shavlik Protect Version Standard 9.2.4988.0

I have just built 2 new Windows 2012 R2 Servers and have tried to deploy patches to them but the Status of the deployment just sits at Scheduled.

      The Scan is completed fine

The files are Downloaded and Copied to the Servers

      The Scheduled Task gets installed

Telnet from the Windows 2012 R2 Servers to the Shavlik Protect Server over Port 3121 is successful

But the Scheduled Task is not activated

If I right click on the Scheduled Task and click Run, then the deployment will complete

If I Right Click and select Run as Administrator on

      C:\Windows\ProPatches\Staged\2017-01-27-T-08-57-54\InstallPatches-16270.bat

The file turns to InstallPatches-16270.his and the Deployment is completed

I have noticed that the following Folder is not created

      C:\Programdata\LANDESK

All other servers are fine, but this is a new site and I'm just wondering besides Port 3121 is there any other Ports that are required to be open back to the Shavlik Protect Server

          Hello,

The most common issues with new servers is the scheduler not being able to inform the Protect server it started the task.  Deployment Tracker Stays at Executed or Scheduled Status

If using the Shavlik Scheduler, port 5120 is needed to install the scheduler service and send commands to the scheduler.  You should verify this port is open from the Protect server to the target server.

As you stated, 3121 is used by the scheduler to communicate back to the Protect server.

Make sure you can see the ST Remote Scheduler service installed on the targets.

          • Is the MS Task scheduler running on the target servers? (in case you have the MS scheduler selected or it it is trying to fail over to it)
          • What scheduler do have selected in Tools > Options > Scheduling?

Recreate the issue on 1 of these servers then take a look in the C:\Windows\ProPatches\Logs and the C:\Windows\ProPatches\Scheduler folders. (could even delete them before the test to make them easier to parse)  The logs may give a clue on why the jobs aren't starting.  There are some log chatter errors that mean nothing so it may be a good idea to post the errors or the error logs.

          Thanks,

          Charles

            Hi Charles

I did what you suggested but here is the outcome

            Stopped service

Deleted the Scheduler and Logs Folder

            Restarted the Server

            redid a deployment

But the C:\Windows\Propatches\logs folder has not been created

I take it this is because the Scheduled Task was not started

            In Task scheduler

            Name

            Scheduled Deployment

            Status

            Queued

            But last Run Result

The operation completed successfully (I take it this is because I kicked off one of the last Schedules manually)

I have 3 VM Templates which get patched successfully

                Hello,

Are the targets host VM Template or Hosted Offline\Online servers?  If yes, that changes how we can troubleshoot.

Do you have answers for my questions?

                Thanks,

                  Hi Charles

The  Servers in question are Online windows 2012 R2 Servers.

I just mentioned the VM Templates as they seem to be working fine

                    Hello,

Hosted Templates (along with online\offline VMs) use a completely different mechanism to deploy patches.

It doesn't look like any jobs are being scheduled through the Shavlik Scheduler.

Do you have answers for my questions?

                    • Is the MS Task scheduler running on the target servers? (in case you have the MS scheduler selected or it it is trying to fail over to it)
                    • What scheduler do have selected in Tools > Options > Scheduling?

                    Thanks,

                    Charles

                      Hi Charles

Yes the Task Scheduler is running on the system

In Shavlik under Tools  -->  Options  -->  Scheduling.   We are running Shavlik Scheduler

                      Thanks

Everything seems to be in order.  One of our support tech will need to take a look at your logs, please open a case with them and attach the entire C:\Windows\ProPatches (minus the \Patches folder)  It should zip down to a manageable size.  Please reference this post in the case.

                              Hello,

                              Update.

                              1) Verified port 5120 is blocked from the Protect server to all sites. For this reason, we changed the scheduler option to use the Microsoft Scheduler instead of the Shavlik Scheduler.

                              2) The deployment job is successfully scheduled in the Microsoft Scheduler, but the job never runs. The job sits in a queued status with warnings in the History tab. The IDs are 110 and 325.

Going forward, we don't have a solution for the issues with the MS Scheduler running on these servers. My only thought is there is an issue with the OS build (not happening on all machines) they are using to create the server or something else like GPO, corruption or some other configuration\issue is causing it to fail to run and stat in a Queued status.

Opening port 5120 to allow the Shavlik Scheduler could also be a viable workaround.

                              Thanks,

                              Charles
