I moved your post out of 'Site Help'. I'm assuming you mean you're using Shavlik Protect. If yes, this is one of the main functions of Shavlik Protect.

I must be misunderstanding something. I did exactly what the direction in the first link said to do and upon completion it showed "Patch Installed (43)" which leads me to believe that 43 patches were applied. Is that an incorrect understanding of it?
That just means Protect detected 43 patches already installed on the system. It will show you both missing and installed patches in the scan result even if the patches were installed by an alternate method other than Protect.
If you right click on one of the missing patches listed in your scan result, then you'll see the option to actually Deploy (push and install) patches via Protect.

One other good thing to remember is that you can hit 'F1' at any time in Protect, and it will attempt to give you a closely related help article depending what screen you're on in the program.
