This document may be helpful:
What is the version of the VMware host(s) being used?
Do you know if this is happening with all your hosted VMs or just some? (Possibly on just one host)
Thx for your reply.
Yes I have seen that document, it mentions there being numbers after the words 'Virtual Disk' but I did not see any.
I have two VMware servers which host the templates, both run ESXi 4.0 and there have been no recent changes made to these hosts.
I've attached the HF.LOG file if its of any use ?

This is the full error from the log - including the number that you were referring to:
2014-03-21T15:01:12.7119055Z 0678 E ScanWorkItem.cpp:458 Error in scan thread func class virtualMachine::CVirtualMachineException at VMWareMounter.cpp:221: Error: 802 - Unable to open virtual disk (16053)
One of the requirements in Protect 9 is use of VMware ESXi 4.1 or later or VMware ESX Server 4.0 or later.
Is it for sure ESXi 4.0? Or ESX 4.0?
I will have to double check if this requirement changed between Protect 8 and Protect 9.
Additionally it might help to ensure that VMware Tools is fully-up-to date and that your VM host is updated.
The requirements did change from Protect 8 to Protect 9.
In Protect 8 this was the requirement for the VMware hosts being used when performing offline VM scanning:
VMware ESX Server 3.0 or later
VMware ESXi 3.0 or later
Protect 9 requirements:
VMware ESX Server 4.0 or later (VMware Tools is required on the Virtual Machines)
VMware ESXi 4.1 or later (VMware Tools is required on the Virtual Machines)
Full requirements here:
That would explain why it worked in Protect 8 and does not work in Protect 9 then, our hosts are definitely ESXi 4.0, despite VMTools being up to date.
In which case, i will see if I can move them to an ESXi 5.0 host.
Thanks for your help.
So I have replicated one of the VM templates to an ESXi 5.1 host, and I still get the same error code and message when trying to scan.
Tried updating VMtools and VM hardware version, this made no difference.
