"Scan Only:" Option Fails to Filter Machine Type When Linking File in Machine Group

Version 2

    Purpose

To identify why "Scan only:" filtration would be ignored when linking a file in a Machine Group

    Symptoms

You have a Machine Group with a linked file, and "Scan only:" filtration options selected in your Machine Group, but machines of other types are being scanned

    Example:

The Machine Group pictured below is built off of a linked file, and has the "Scan only:" box checked for Servers, but scans on this group still include other types (i.e., workstations)

    Cause

When linking a file to your Machine Group, that file takes precedence over filtration and every machine listed in that file will be explicitly included in any operations run on your Machine Group

    Resolution

To only scan specific machine types while linking a file, the file must contain only machines of those specific types.

To continue the example above and scan only servers, you could:

    • Link instead to a new file of only servers
    • Explicitly define membership of the Machine Group (not in a file)
    • Utilizing the new folder view in Ivanti Patch for Windows Servers 9.3+, you can split servers and workstations into separate files linked to separate machine groups, but make them part of the same folder to easily apply operations to both when desired
